The town and anchorage at Hammerfest, Norway.
The town and anchorage at Hammerfest, Norway. The photographer is looking west from the north end of the Sadlen showing the harbour and main town. The premises of M. Gabrielsen are in the right foreground and a number of motor fishing vessels and other craft are moored in the harbour. Two of the warehouses fronting the harbour are occupied by Feddersen & Nissen and the building near the passenger landing steps on the right has Nissen Bunkers Salt on it. The Parish Church is to the left of centre. A motor bus is on the harbourside to the left and near it are the shops of Herreekviperingen, Harald Jensen and C.F. Knobloch. All of the buildings are of wooden construction. The town of Hammerfest was totally destroyed by German forces in early 1945 and none of the buildings in this photograph survived. At anchor in the distance and seen from just abaft her port beam is the Canadian Pacific Steamships passenger cruise ship Empress of Australia (1914) and in the harbour on the right is a cargo ship in ballast.. The island of Sörö is in the background.
