The harbour and east side of the town at Hammerfest, Norway.

The harbour and east side of the town at Hammerfest, Norway. The photographer is looking south-by-east from near the passenger landing steps and two passenger cruise ship tenders are alongside the steps. A number of steam and motor fishing vessels and some other craft are moored in the harbour. A warehouse fronting the harbour is occupied by M. Gabrielsen Bygnings Artikler Traelast. St Michael's Church is on the left. The Sadlen is in the background and on the top of the Sadlen are a lookout tower and a signal station which is under construction. All of the buildings are of wooden construction. The town of Hammerfest was totally destroyed by German forces in early 1945 and none of the buildings in this photograph survived.
