Ship Cover for HMS Glatton (1871) and HMS Hotspur (1870).
Ship Cover for the turreted ironclads HMS Glatton (1871) and HMS Hotspur (1870). The documentation mainly relates to the agreed specifications for the ships in the design stages, including weights and dimensions; stability calculations and assigned armament/ammunition stowage. Further papers pertaining to Hotspur deal with crew complement, stores, and plans for the rebuild of 1881-3. The specifications for Glatton are accompanied by general specifications for a twin-turret monitor, while those for Hotspur are filed with specifications for an improved version [probably an early concept for HMS Rupert (1872)]. The date range for the Glatton documents cover her design stages from April 1868 and early career, ending at September 1878. The period covered by Hotspur's papers is wider, going from February 1878 to October 1882.
