Ship Cover for HMS Bacchante (1876), HMS Boadicea (1875), HMS Euryalus (1877) and a design for HMS Highflyer (never built).
Ship Cover for the Bacchante class iron screw corvettes HMS Bacchante (1876), HMS Boadicea (1875) and HMS Euryalus (1877). The documentation covers the initial design phase for these ships, commencing in about September 1871, and continuing well into the vessels' careers before breaking off in May 1888. The papers deal with preliminary design requirements, specifications, dtatements of proposed and actual dimensions and weights, allocation of weapons and ammunition, details of the wood and copper hull sheathing for foreign service, estimates of cost, general fittings such as anchors and boats, displacement, stability and ballasting, masting, crew complement and coal endurance. A further set of documents at the end of the Cover pertain to a design for a vessel named Highflyer. This design -of which nothing ever came- appears to have been drawn up with a view to countering the US Wampanoag type screw frigates/commerce raiders. Data from the Bacchante class and and the unarmoured iron screw frigate HMS Shah (1873) also appear to have influenced this design.
