Ship Cover for HMS Neptune (1874) and HMS Superb (1875).

Ship Cover for the masted turret ship HMS Neptune [ex-Independencia] (1874) and the central battery ironclad HMS Superb [ex-Hamidieh] (1875). The documentation for Neptune commences in April 1878 while the ship was still being completed and ends in September 1886, just prior to her reduction to coast guard service. The papers for Superb begin in October 1873 when the ship was laid down and ends in October 1904 when the ship was reduced to harbour service. The material mainly comprises stability calculations, specifications, weights and dimensions for both ships. However, other items of correspondence relate specifically to the masting, rigging and sail arrangements for Neptune and allocation of armament, ammunition, crew complement and coal stowage for Superb. One item of interest relating to the latter ship is a report from her captain concerning damage suffered by the ship during the bombardment of Alexandria in 1882.
