Ship Cover for iron screw corvettes of the Volage class and composite screw sloops of the Fantome, Osprey and Doterel classes.

Ship Cover for iron screw corvettes of the Volage class and composite screw sloops of the Fantome, Osprey and Doterel classes. Specific ships represented are HMS Active (1869), HMS Albatross (1873), HMS Cormorant (1877), HMS Daring (1874), HMS Dragon (1878), HMS Egeria (1873), HMS Fantome (1873), HMS Flying Fish (1873), HMS Gannet (1878), HMS Kingfisher (1879), HMS Osprey (1876), HMS Pegasus (1878), HMS Pelican (1877), HMS Penguin (1876), HMS Sappho (1873), HMS Volage (1869) and HMS Wild Swan (1876). The documentation is quite wide-ranging, and covers the initial design proposals, specifications, hull weights, dimensions, stability calculations, mast and yard arrangements, armament and ammunition allocation, assigned crew complements, general fittings and ship equipment. Condition reports for the Volage and the Osprey/Doterel class ships at different times in their service lives are also present. Further papers specific to the Osprey and Doterel classes relate to the results of model trials, costs and building times/delivery estimates, coal endurance and stowage and machinery and engine details. There is also some correspondence and a specification for another vessel named 'Dwarf', but it is not certain whether these are connected with the Beacon class. The documentation for the Volage class begins in March 1867 when the ships were laid down and ends in March 1902 shortly before the vessels were sold. The paperwork for the remainder commences in November 1873 when the Fantomes were nearing completion and peters out in May 1912 when the surviving Ospreys and Doterels were serving in secondary roles.
