Ship Cover for HMS Colossus (1882) and HMS Edinburgh [originally to be named Majestic] (1882).
Ships Cover for the Colossus class turret ships HMS Colossus (1882) and HMS Edinburgh [originally to be named Majestic] (1882). The documentation mainly relates to the initial design considerations and proposals for the 'new Ajax', statements of dimensions and weights, some frame strength calculations, crew complement, written details of pumps and other machinery, stability calculations (including analysis of stability with battle damage to the unarmoured ends), and allocation of armament and ammunition to be carried. The latter subject receives the most attention in terms of the amount of documentation devoted to it, and includes details of loading/training machinery, precis of the discussions in the early 1880s over the type of gun to be adopted and firing angles permitted by the turret arrangement. The documentation dates from May 1878 during the design phase and ends in February 1905, by which time both ships had been relegated to duty as tenders for training establishments.
