Ship cover for HMS Amphion (1883), HMS Arethusa (1882), HMS Leander (1882) and HMS Phaeton (1883).
Ships Cover for the Leander class second class cruisers HMS Amphion (1883), HMS Arethusa (1882), HMS Leander (1882) and HMS Phaeton (1883). The most significant portion of the documentation relates to the conversion of Leander to a destroyer depot ship in 1904. Other depot ships (not of the same class) receive a great deal of attention in these pages, to the extent that this could almost be considered a destroyer depot ship Cover circa 1904 to 1911. The remainder of the papers relate to the masting and yard arrangements for the class as completed, the early design proposals and ideas, statements of dimensions and weights, general correspondence relating to fittings such as the anchors, allocated armament, scheme of complement, coal endurance and issues of achieving efficient propulsion. Further paperwork relates to a detailed proposal for re-arming the members of this class circa 1901 (there is no evidence that this was implemented). In terms of the date range, the documents commence in February 1879 during the initial design stages and conclude in January 1911, by which time only two of the class were still in RN service; Leander as a depot ship and Phaeton in reserve.
