Ships Cover for HMS Anson (1886), HMS Benbow (1885) and HMS Camperdown (1885).

Ships Cover for the Admiral class barbette battleships HMS Anson (1886), HMS Benbow (1885) and HMS Camperdown (1885). The documentation mainly relates to stability calculations, statements of dimensions and weights, crew complement, stores and fittings, proposals for the re-armouring of the entire class circa 1898, and miscellaneous modernisation suggestions [most of which appear not to have been implemented]. The bulk of the papers concern the Benbow specifically, and comprise the early design specification, lengthy documents relating to the design, layout, operation and handling of the 16.5" gun, and a statement of the proposed armament. Miscellaneous papers also present include published particulars of the completed ship, the results of steam and manoeuvreing trials for Anson and Camperdown from the mid-1890s and a pamphlet written in 1886 by William White entitled "On the Speed Trials of Recent War Ships". In terms of date range, the documents commence in April 1882, shortly after Anson's keel was laid, and end in May 1905, by which point all the vessels represented in this Cover were in Reserve.
