Ships Cover for HMS Curlew (1885) and HMS Landrail (1886).
Ships Cover for the Curlew class gun and torpedo vessels HMS Curlew (1885) and HMS Landrail (1886). The documents that can be read pertain to detailed accounts of the original design proposal and recorded discussions on this subject, statements of dimensions and weights, some stability calculations, allocated ammunition and trial reports. Two detailed reports from late 1886 which are in good condition recount the performance of the Curlew in various weather conditions in both the Channel and off the Portuguese coast. The remainder of the papers relate to various alterations carried out in the 20th Century, save for a very detailed report of the sinking of Landrail and the accidental loss of one life in the process. The paperwork commences in May 1884 with the beginning of the design phase and ends in October 1906 with the sinking of Landrail [Curlew had been sold for breakup by this point].
