Ship Cover for HMS San Pareil (1887) and HMS Victoria [ex-Renown] (1887).
Ship Cover for the Victoria class turret batleships HMS San Pareil (1887) and HMS Victoria [ex-Renown] (1887). The documentation mainly relates to the initial design proposals, the latter including a number of sketches and tabular data for Designs 'C' and 'D', with brief reference made to Designs 'A' and 'B', costings for the various designs, sketch comparisons of armour distribution with previous RN ships, brief statements on the design dimensions and weights, armament and ammunition allowance [includes a sketch of a 10-inch mounting aboard the Chilean cruiser Esmeralda (1883)], details of the turret rollers developed by Armstrongs, documentation dealing with tenders, scheme of complement, details of the mainmast, stability calculations, brief trials reports and copies of the printed memoranda for the Ships Books. There are a number of papers relating to Victoria's grounding at Dragomesti in early 1892 and the efforts to refloat her, but surprisingly nothing for her subsequent loss in 1893. Another items of interest in this Cover are a printed lecture of 1889 titled 'Distribution of Armour in Ships of War' which compares the advantages and disadvantages of belted and citadel armour arrangements as they had developed up to 1889. The papers commence in September 1884 at the outset of the design stages and end in December 1903, by which time Sans Pareil was in reserve.
