Ships Cover for the Pearl class third class protected cruisers HMS Katoomba [ex-Pandora] (1889), HMS Mildura [ex-Pelorus] (1889), HMS Pallas (1890), HMS Pearl (1890), HMS Phoebe (1890), HMS Philomel (1890), HMS Ringarooma [ex-Psyche] (1889), HMS Tauranga [ex-Phoenix] (1889) and HMS Wallaroo [ex-Persian] (1890). The documents mainly relate to stability calculations, statements of dimensions and weights, a precis of the design proposal correspondence, comparisons of the new design with the Archer and Medea classes, armament arrangement and ammunition allowance, correspondence with Armstrong, Elswick and Thomson of Glasgow, a copy of a very detailed report on the characteristics of the Pearls dated 1889, letters relating to alterations both pre and post completion, basic equipment and fittings eg. boats and anchors, costs of construction and fitting, proposed and finalised schemes of complement, reports of trials, coal endurance and some items relating to machinery performance, and maintenance returns. The papers commence in April 1887 at the beginning of the design phase and end in July 1911, five years after the class had been withdrawn from service and all but Philomel and Wallaroo scrapped.
