Ships Cover for the torpedo boat carrier HMS Vulcan (1889). The documents mainly relate to proposals for the original design and a 1907 proposal for conversion to a submarine depot ship, statements of dimensions and weights with some comparative reference to HMS Hecla (1878), armament arrangement and ammunition allowance, stability calculations, cost estimates, details of equipment such as anchors and boats, constructional details pertaining to the hull structure, riveting and pumping arrangements, alterations carried out during and after construction and post-commissioning condition reports, crew complement, trials reports, and supply capacity. The papers commence in October 1886 at the beginning of the design process and end in August 1929, shortly before her conversion to the training hulk Defiance III.
