The documentation mainly relates to the initial design proposal with specifications, estimated costs and precis of discussions, statements of dimensions and weights as proposed, gun and torpedo armament and ammunition allowance, ships fittings eg. boats, masts and yards, anchors, compasses and lighting gear, stability calculations, schemes of complement, alterations made both during construction and after commissioning, various trial and performance reports from members of the class at sea, and correspondence between the DNC and the contractors. The papers commence in August 1888 at the beginning of the design phase and end in 1913, by which time all surviving members of the class were serving in secondary roles.
