Ships Cover for various store carriers, tugs and barges for the Naval Ordnance Department (1899-1902). Most of the craft detailed in this Cover are numbered dumb barges too small to appear on most reference lists. The eight named vessels of significant size included in the Cover are the dockyard barge Alfred (1901), the dockyard barge Bessie (1899) the store carrier Bison (1902), the dockyard barge Emily (1899), the dockyard tug Lucy (1902), the dockyard tug Marchwood (1900), the dockyard barge Maria (1899), and the armament store carrier Upnor (1899). The documentation mainly comprises statements of dimensions and weights, stability calculations, correspondence with contractors, details of ships equipment, papers relating to Admiralty requirements and justifications for acquiring the new ships. The earliest papers date from February 1897 and the last December 1908. Ships Cover 171A continues parts of this Cover.
