Ships Cover for HMS Formidable (1898), HMS Irresistible (1898) and HMS Implacable (1899)

Ships Cover for the Formidable class first class battleships HMS Formidable (1898), HMS Irresistible (1898) and HMS Implacable (1899). Due to the similarities of this class with the preceding Majestic and Canopus classes there is no detailed design description for the Formidables. However, there is a lot of documentation comparing the new design with the Majestics and Canopuses, as well as the Japanese HIJMS Asahi (1899) and HIJMS Shikishima (1898). Other documents present in this Cover are statements of dimensions and estimates of weights, copies of contracts for armour and details of tenders, details of armament and ammunition allowance, details of and discussion papers relating to ships fittings, equipment and machinery (eg. boats, andchors and cables, ventilation, mastst etc), cost estimates, schemes of complement, stability claculations and details of alterations. The earliest documents date from February 1897 when the ships were approved and the latest in June 1909 when all three ships had been recalled to home waters.
