Ships Cover for the shallow-draught Yangtze gunboats HMS Kinsha (purchased 1900), HMS Moorhen (1901), HMS Nightingale (1897), HMS Robin (1897), HMS Sandpiper (1897), HMS Snipe (1897), HMS Teal (1901), HMS Widgeon (1904), HMS Woodcock (1897) and HMS Woodlark (1897). The documentation is quite varied but general papers which relate to all of these vessels include justifications for the vessels' use on the China Station, discussions of the merits ov Thornycroft and Yarow designs, details of tenders, details of Admiralty specifications and requirements, correspondence with the contractors, schemes of complement, steam trial reports, details of alterations made duing and after construction, vessel condition reports, details of anchors and boats carried, stability calculations, reports of vessel performance in service conditions, details of foreign China gunboat designs and detailed proposals from serving officers as to ideal future gunboat designs. The earliest papers relate to Moorhen and Teal and date from November 1899, while the latest are dated May 1920.
