Ships Cover for the King George V class battleships HMS Ajax (1912), HMS Audacious (1912), HMS Centurion (1911) and HMS King George V [ex-Royal George] (1911). The documents primarily comprise statements of dimensions and estimates of weights, schemes of complement, correspondence relating to tenders with contracting firms building the ships and supplying machinery, armour and equipment, details of equipment and fittings, details of armour and armament, different forms of propellers and the best type to be adopted, improvements to hull form and bilge keels [and the installation of anti-rolling tanks]. There is also correspondence on alterations carried out during construction, most notably the decision to suppress foretops placed in way of smoke from the forward funnels. The papers cover the period June 1910 to April 1912.
