General Ships Cover for wooden vessels still in service with the Royal Navy from the early 1870s onwards. The classes represented are the Ariadne, Bristol, Ister and Liffey class screw frigates; Britomart class screw gunboats; Jason, Juno and Pearl class screw corvettes; Camelion, Cruizer and Rosario class screw sloops; Cormorant/Eclipse class screw gunvessels; Majestic class screw Third Rates; and Victoria class screw First Rates.

The paperwork in this Cover is very eclectic. Specific, named vessels to which a fair amount of documentation is devoted are as follows: HMS Alert (1856) [fitting for Nares Arctic Expedition]; HMS Ariadne (1859); HMS Cadmus (1856); HMS Charybdis (1859); HMS Clio (1858); HMS Columbine (1862); HMS Cruizer (1852) [as training ship]; HMS Discovery, ex-Bloodhound (1873) [fitting for Nares Arctic Expedition]; HMS Endymion (1865); HMS Fawn (1856) [as survey vessel]; HMS Howe (1860) [as 'Bulwark' for harbour service, circa 1885]; HMS Juno (1867); HMS Liffey (1856); HMS Liverpool (1860); HMS Narcissus (1859); HMS Newcastle (1860); HMS Pearl (1855); HMS Peterel (1860); HMS Raccoon (1857); HMS Revenge (1859) [as base ship at Queenstown, Ireland]; HMS Rinaldo (1860); HMS Rosario (1860); HMS Royalist (1861); HMS Satellite (1855); HMS Scout (1856); HMS Scylla (1856); HMS Severn (1860); HMS Sparrowhawk, ex-Lark, ex-Falcon (1877) [survey vessel purchased in the West indies]; HMS Thalia (1869); HMS Topaze (1858); HMS Undaunted (1861); HMS Victor Emmanuel, ex-Repulse (1855); and HMS Wolverene (1863).
