Bamboo rafts alongside a canal at Batavia, Java, Indonesia
Bamboo raft alongside a canal wall at Batavia, Java, Indonesia. Two of the rafts are carrying cargoes of bamboo poles. Three women are sitting on the edge of one of the rafts doing their washing which they have brought to the canal in wicker baskets. One of the women has her basket inverted on her head as protection from the sun or perhaps she is shy of the photographer. A man with a cloth on his head is sitting on one of the rafts. Street traders and a motor car are on the canal bank.
