The commercial wharves and the buildings in the Alfama district of Lisbon, Portugal. The photographer is in a boat in the Tagus looking towards the wharves on which there are track mounted cranes. The masts of sailing craft can be seen behind the wharves and one of the single masted sailing craft is heading directly away from the photographer's boat. The stern of a steamship is on the right of the picture. St. Stephen Church (Igreja de Santo Estevao) is on the left and the Church or Monastery of São Vicente de Fora is on the skyline to the left of centre. The top right part of the negative is missing but only the sky is affected.
