The waterfront by the Bahia da Potinha at Funchal, Madeira. The photographer is on the shore looking west showing a number of rowing boats drawn up on the beach. A number of wooden frames, possibly for beach tents, are in situ. Gangs of men are digging holes in the beach. Buildings behind the substantial sea wall include the Hotel Palace and Coaling Company offices.
