The waterfront at Funchal, Madeira, and shipping in the anchorage.
The waterfront at Funchal, Madeira and shipping in the anchorage. The photographer is on high ground to the east of the town near Sao Goncalo looking west-south-west showing the passenger landing pier jutting out into the harbour on the right with the Bahia da Potinha and Reid's Palace Hotel in the background. Nine steam and motor ships and a four masted hulk are in the anchorage. Six of the ships are passenger vessels and on the left is a 2-funnelled Union-Castle Line mail motor ship, either the Winchester Castle (1930) or the Warwick Castle (1930). The nearest ship, seen from off her port bow, is one of the Blue Star Line A class.
