Bumboats alongside the Orient Line passenger cruise ship Orontes (1929) in the anchorage at Funchal, Madeira. The photographer is on the port side of the deck of the ship looking aft and down showing about twenty bumboats gathered near a motor tender which is full of passengers alongside the ship's accommodation ladder. The traders are bartering embroidered and lace products. The boat in the foreground contains children who are hoping for monetary gifts from the tourists. One of the local men is climbing on a rope suspended down the ship's side.
