Portuguese Navy sloops from on board the P. & O. passenger cruise ship Viceroy of India (1929) at Funchal, Madeira.
A slightly distant starboard broadside view of the Portuguese Navy sloop Bartolomeu Dias (1934) in the anchorage at Funchal, Madeira. her forepart is out of the picture and she has awnings rigged aft. Closer inshore is the Portuguese Navy sloop Goncalo Velho (1932), also seen from off her starboard beam, and she has awnings rigged fore and aft. The photographer is on the aft games deck of the P. & O. Line passenger cruise ship Viceroy of India (1929). He is looking to port and in the left foreground is her motor tender A on chocks on the deck. In the town beyond the bridge of the Bartolomeu Dias is a tall brick-built column with a mast on top of it and further inland is the square tower of the Jesuit College Church. On the left is a factory chimney with DUNLOP on it and on the hill slopes above it is the Fortaleza do Pico.
