The photographer is looking aft from the port side of the upper promenade deck amidships showing lifeboats 8 and 10 under their davits on the promenade deck. The passenger landing pier is to the right of centre and on the right is a tall brick-built column with a mast on top of it. Behind this column is Blandys building with the Diario de Noticias next to it. and in the background is the square tower of the Jesuit College Church. In the left background up the hill slope is the Fortaleza do Pico.
