The photographer is looking aft from the top of the accommodation ladder on the starboard side amidships showing bumboats close alongside with local traders bartering their wares. Goods for sale include wickerwork chairs, baskets and tables and also embroidered and lace items. Passengers and members of the crew are looking over the side at the traders. The passenger landing pier on the waterfront is in the right background. On the waterfront in the centre is a structure with Eagle Oil on it. In the left background is a tall chimney with DUNLOP on it and beyond it is the Fortaleza do Pico.
