A signalling feature on the waterfront at Funchal, Madeira. The photographer is looking north-north-east from the end of the passenger landing pier showing a tall brick-built column with a signalling mast on the top of it. Two davits are at the top of the column and the lines go down to cleats fixed to the side of building number 8 on the waterfront. Buildings behind the column are occupied by Diario de Noticias, Blandys and by Blandy Brothers & Co Lda. The steeple of the Catedral of Nossa Senhora da Assuncao is on the right and the clock is reading 4.15. A large number of rowing boats and estada fishing boats are drawn up on the foreshore.
