The photographer is looking south-east and down from Duke of York Avenue showing the lower road, the high level footbridge and the braced lattice structure of the lift tower. On the lift access is an advert for Cisk Lacto and written on the tower is "Advertise with Berka & Times of Malta". The Times of Malta was first published in 1935. Many cars and horse drawn carriages are parked by the foot of the lift tower. At moorings in the Grand Harbour and seen from dead ahead is the Royal Fleet Auxiliary store carrier Reliant (1923).
