The town of Saint Pierre, Martinique
The town of Saint Pierre, Martinique. The photographer is on board a passenger cruise ship looking towards the shore showing one of the ship's boats heading for the shore. To the left of centre in the town is the Co-Cathedral of Our Lady of Assumption. The town is backed by heavily wooded hills. Saint Pierre was almost totally destroyed when the Mount Pelee volcano erupted on 8 May 1902. The cathedral was rebuilt using old stones with the addition of volcanic rocks and bricks and was completed in 1908.
