'US Battleships in the Forth'

Inscribed, as title, and signed by the artist, lower left. The drawing has a ruled pencil surround, suggesting it may be for reproduction, and is mounted on a backing sheet on which another hand has added inscriptions identifying the American ships shown against the background of the Forth Bridge: from left to right, the USS 'New York' (as flagship), 'Wyoming', 'Florida' and 'Akansas'. The British 'Princess Royal' is also similarly identified, far right. The American battleships formed the 6th Battle Squadron of the Grand Fleet from December 1917 to November 1918. They arrived on 7 December 1917, except for the 'Arkansas' which came in August 1918. Since all four left the Forth in late November 1918 for Portland, Dorset, to join President Wilson's escort for his post-war European tour (starting in France in December before returning there to the Versailles conference in March 1919), the date represented here must be August to November 1918.
