Greenwich Reach and the Isle of Dogs in winter

A winter view apparently taken from an upper window of the old Ship Hotel (destroyed in WWII) at Greenwich Pier, towards the southern riverfront of the Isle of Dogs. Wyllie was staying there to sketch in January 1924: see PAF1305 for the circumstances. The spire of Christchurch is visible above the trees of Island Gardens with the Waterman's Arms to its right. There are three lighters in the river (two being rowed with sweeps) and a steam tug in the distance.

Wyllie's MS text in pencil, below and to the right of the image, shows he later apparently reproduced it as an invitation, viz: 'W L Wyllie requests the honour of the company of / [blank space] and friends / at the private view of an Exhibition of watercolours, on Thursday May 7th 1925 / The Abbey Gallery / 2 Victoria Street SW.1'. On the back the boxed number '152' and the price £5 indicate it is from his studio collection purchased by Sir James Caird.
