A sketch of the sea made while the artist was at Corbiere in Jersey. Everett painted a large number of sketches observing the movement of waves approaching the shore. He experimented with colour and form to achieve the effects he sought and in this sketch the dark undersides of the waves are hatched with short brush strokes of colour. The crests of the waves have been graded in tone from lilac in the foreground to thicker white paint in the middle distance. The sketch demonstrates Everett's interest in the effects of light and the relationship between the sea and the sky. He stayed at Corbiere from 13 January to 6 February 1928, to paint the constantly changing appearance of sea and sky. The sketch is inscribed 'Jersey' verso.
