A First World War barrage balloon, 'SW30'
Inscribed by the artist, lower right, 'SW30'. Barrage balloons were first used during the last years of the First World War in response to attacks by German Gotha bombers on London. This is a ballon of that period, since Wyllie (d. 1931) did not live to see their greater use in the Second World War, after the formation of Balloon Command in 1938.
