A fleeting impression of a lively sea seascape with a ship silhouetted against the horizon on the right. The sea and sky are loosely sketched with hatched areas of white creating the effect of movement. Dramatic impact is created by contrasting the dark sea with lighter sky. Purple streaks across the sky represent the clouds and there are pink and blue bands of colour just above the horizon. Everett painted a large number of sketches observing the movement of waves as they approach the shore and experimented with colour and form to achieve the effects he sought. Everett was concerned with the effects of light and representations of light in the sky and the relationship between the sea and the sky. He stayed at Corbiere from 13 January to 6 February 1928, to paint the constantly changing appearance of sea and sky. The sketch is inscribed 'Jersey' verso.
