A fleeting impression of a seascape with a ship loosely sketched on the left. In this rapid sketch the artist has focused on the way to paint the relationship between sea, sky and the ship. Despite the looseness of the sketch, Everett has used a formulaic way to paint the waves moving diagonally across the sketch. The crests are shown as patches of light paint contrasting with the underside of the waves shown as diagonal hatching lines in unusually dark grey-green tones. This is echoed in the shading of both the ship and the smoke trailing across the sky to the right. To contrast with the sea the sky is highlighted with a pink horizontal line above the horizon and by graded tones of pink, lilac and pale blue to indicate the sun's rays.
