A distant view of Palermo, Sicily from the top of Monte Pellegrino.
A distant view of Palermo, Sicily. The photographer is looking south from the northern peak of Monte Pellegrino and on top of the southern peak is the Grand Hotel Utveggio, opened in 1934. Two passenger ships are alongside the Santa Lucia Mole and the Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Company passenger cruiseship Strathmore (1935) is alongside the Piave Mole. The third mole is the Vittorio Veneto Mole and it has had the outer stone walls completed and work is well under way with the infilling. Beyond this mole is an area next to the shore that has been walled and partly infilled and a large area has been covered with substantial concrete structures. The harbour and city is backed by a ring of mountains.
