Seascape from the 'Umberleigh'

A sketch made from the deck of the 'Umberleigh', showing the rhythm of the waves. The sea has been painted in a stylized manner and is shown as dark blue streaked with green and with flashes of yellow to highlight the water. The wave in the foreground on the left shows the white foam reduced to a honeycomb pattern. The sky is implied with thin washes of colour. The sketch draws attention to the emptiness and vastness of the ocean. Everett sailed in the steamer, 'Umberleigh', from Barry, Wales, to Vancouver, Canada, in December 1933 and returned in March 1934. The painting is inscribed 'Um' verso.
