The horizon is on the level with the viewer's eye. The sky contrasts with the dark sea with light blue tones, to make the sketch an exercise in blue paint. Everett sailed in the steamer, 'Umberleigh', from Barry, Wales, to Vancouver, Canada, in December 1933 and returned in March 1934. The painting is inscribed 'Um' verso.
