A sketch showing the effects of moonlight from the deck of the 'Umberleigh'. The calm sea is shown as an expanse of grey-blue tones flecked with small diagonal dashes of colour. The sky is indicated by several bands of horizontal colour as a backdrop to the focal point of the painting, the light from the moon. The moon shines through cloud in the centre of the sky in between coloured clouds, and casts a brilliant silvery light over the surface of the water. A thin horizontal strip of colour lies above the horizon. Everett sailed in the steamer, 'Umberleigh', from Barry, Wales to Vancouver, Canada, in December 1933 and returned in March 1934. The painting is inscribed 'Umberleigh' verso.
