The photographer is on board the Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Company passenger cruise ship Viceroy of India (1929) while the ship is at anchor and is looking north-west at the premises of Cox & Kings, C. Evans & Co., Grindlay & Co. Ltd., Lloyd Triestino and Deutsches Kohlen-Depot S.A. Egyptienne on the canal side. Two large advertisements for Beck's Beer are noticeable and the lighthouse is in the background.
