Looking over the rooftops of Punta Arenas, Chile.

Looking over the rooftops of Punta Arenas, Chile. The photographer is looking south-by-west from a hill showing the mainly residential area of the southern part of the town where the majority of the properties have corrugated iron roofs and many also have corrugated iron exterior walls. The streets are unlit and a number of the properties have stove pipe chimneys. Offshore there is a variety of steam and sailing ships, hulks and lighters. To the right of centre in the background with her bow against the shore is the hulk of the former barque Falstaff (1875) with the steamship hulk Hipparchus (1867) alongside her, both serving as breakwaters.
