St. James Church, Jacob's Ladder and Ladder Hill Fort at Jamestown on St. Helena. The photographer is looking south-south-west from seaward close to the wharf showing the sea wall fronting the town with St. James Church on the left beyond the hand operated crane on the end of the wharf. The 699 steps Jacob's Ladder was built in 1829 to provide access from the valley floor to the fort on top of Ladder Hill.
