A distant port side view of the Anchor Line passenger cruise ship California (1923) anchored offshore at Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. The ship is dressed overall. The photographer is on shore looking to seaward and in the foreground is a fence made up of muzzle loading cannon barrels embedded in the ground with two lines of substantial chain between each barrel. On the left is a motor car chassis with a bonnet over the engine but no other bodywork. A wooden seat has been built behind the steering wheel and a cylindrical fuel tank is mounted at high level behind the seat.
