The harbour and east side of Charlotte Amalie, St Thomas, Virgin Islands. The photographer is looking south from high ground north of the town showing the east side of the town with the Havensight wharves in the left background. On the right are two tall steel lattice radio masts and the rectangular tower of Fort Christian can be seen between them. On the extreme right is Blackbeard's Castle surmounted by an enclosed viewing platform and at the water's edge is the Cooperative Building with its conspicuous square tower. Hassel Island with Cowell's Battery and Signal Station on the summit is in the right background. The White Star Line cruise ship Britannic (1930), seen from off her port beam, is at anchor beyond Hassel Island.
