Porto Grande harbour, St. Vincent (Sao Vicente), Cape Verde Islands.
Porto Grande Harbour, St. Vincent (Sao Vicente), Cape Verde Islands. The photographer is looking west-north-west from the commercial end of Mindelo showing the Shell oil fuel depot on the right. A substantial brick wall separates the buildings from the harbour and the refuelling jetty. A large number of cargo and oil fuel lighters, four steam powered refuelling barges and a steam tug are anchored or moored just offshore. Anchored further out are a general cargo steamer, a Canadian Pacific Steamships Duchess class (1928) cruise ship, a general cargo steamer with the letter U on her funnel and an unidentified cable vessel. They are all seen from off the starboard beam except for the cable vessel which is seen from ahead of the port beam. The cruise ship is one of Duchess of Atholl (1928), Duchess of Bedford (1928) or Duchess of Richmond (1928).
