On board the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company cruise ship Viceroy of India (1929) in the anchorage off Thira, Santorini Island, Greece.
On board the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company cruise ship Viceroy of India (1929) in the anchorage off Thira, Santorini Island, Greece. The photographer is on the forward promenade deck looking to starboard and forward showing the foremast and the starboard side of the forecastle deck. The ship's bell is abaft the foremast. The harbour and landing place of Thira is in the background and the zigzag flight of steps from the landing place up the cliff face to the town is partially obscured by the foremast. The town of Thira is at the top of the cliffs and to the right of centre is the Roman Catholic Cathedral of St. John The Baptist which was destroyed in the Amorgos earthquake on 9 July 1956. A vertical format negative.
