The Boat Quay on the Singapore River, Singapore. The photographer is looking west-by-north over the traffic free Cavenagh Bridge, built in 1868-1870. Large numbers of residential sampans are moored alongside Boat Quay which is backed by terraces of Indian style shophouses. Cargo carrying lighters are being sculled or towed along the river.
