A general view of part of the coast at Spitsbergen, Norway.

A general view of part of the coast at Spitsbergen, Norway. The photographer is on a shore excursion from the Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Company cruise ship Viceroy of India (1929) and is in a bay with a narrow beach. A single masted wooden ship is drawn up on the shore, possibly hulked. Packing cases and pieces of a mast are on the shore and a single storey, pitched roof hut is just above the snow line. Snow covered land is in the background and the summits are covered in low cloud.
