Porto Santo from the 'Panaghis M. Hadoulis'

A sketch showing the island of Porto Santo in the distance. Porto Santo is located 50 km north-east of Funchal. The unfinished nature of the sketch is emphasized by the support paper showing through the dark slate-grey sea. The artist has concentrated on the shape of the islands shown in dark grey profile against the lighter coloured sky. The sky is arranged in bands of pale tones of blue and yellow with darker cloud across the top of the painting. Everett sailed in the Greek-owned steamer, 'Panaghis M. Hadoulis', from Cardiff, Wales, to Montevideo, Uruguay, and back between December 1931 and March, 1932. The painting is inscribed 'Porto Santo', 'PMH' bottom right.
